Arrival in Cascais
Welcome to Portugal!
One of our guides will transfer you to Cascais, which should take about 30 minutes. Explore this delightful town, a village with 650 years of history forged by fishermen but later populated by kings, queens, writers, painters, and singers. However, this all depends on your arrival time! Deep down, Cascais is a synonym for charm and inspiration, something you will undoubtedly feel if you have the chance to walk in its streets and listen to the gentle lullabies of the ocean. This is the perfect beginning for this trip, which can be celebrated with a delicious fresh fish dinner at the village center!
Hike from Cascais / Guincho to Azóia
This day will start with an optional short transfer to Guincho.
Experience a wide and open coastline between dunes, valleys, and small villages. You will feel a rural atmosphere with a touch of luxury, a representation of the past uniting with the present. Follow the wild ocean and enjoy a break at Guincho Beach. The goal for today is to reach your hotel at the head of a secluded valley, and on the way, you have the strong old Guincho’s Fort, no longer protecting us from invaders but providing a beautiful view over the beach. It is a peaceful location where the sea and the mountain meet.
Hike Azóia Loop
Sintra's mountain will immediately take your breath away!
You will start with a circular walk into the "moon hills" as Sintra Mountain was known! This route reaches 488 meters above the sea, where you will find the sanctuary of Peninha. Take a moment to lay back and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view. Up here, you will be surrounded by elegant paths within the forest and be rewarded by the beauty of both land and sea. The perfect place to enjoy the silence and contemplate the endless sky.
Hike from Azóia to Praia Grande
Walk to the edge of Europe at Cabo da Roca
After a relaxed breakfast, set out on a memorable walk through the quiet villages of Azóia and Ulgueira, where whitewashed houses and small cafés reflect the timeless rhythm of local life. Soon, the landscape opens toward the Atlantic, with the option to visit Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, where dramatic cliffs meet endless ocean views. The trail continues along one of Portugal’s most striking coastlines, passing natural landmarks shaped by wind and sea before reaching Adraga Beach, a beautiful stretch of sand framed by rugged cliffs. The walk concludes at Praia Grande, known for its wide shoreline and powerful waves. At the end of the day, enjoy a well-deserved rest and the refined local cuisine that defines this remarkable region.
Hike from Praia Grande to Sintra / Monserrate
Today will be a gorgeous day!
Start from the beach area and hike on the forest trails leading you to the Capuchos Convent and then the Monserrate Palace, a neo-gothic mansion revealing a brilliant example of the romantic period that left such an imprint in Sintra. There is a short-track option for this day. This experience will be a perfect introduction to the atmosphere of Sintra's village, where you can stroll around the historic center and discover little intriguing details, romantic corners, and some delicious regional pastries.

Explore the hills above the village of Sintra.
This day will be reserved for exploring the hills above the village of Sintra and enjoying the vast architectural patrimony set on the mountain. Such is the grandeur and importance of these buildings and monuments that Sintra's cultural landscape was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. Visit the Moorish Castle and the fabulous Pena Palace, with its exuberant and exotic gardens. Today, you will feel like a king or queen, finishing the evening with an exquisite dinner at the village center.

It was my fourth time in Sintra. That beautiful little town keeps its medieval heritage, with old and narrow streets, historical castles, wonderful cuisine and charming stores. But today it also provides modern, up-to-date spots and restaurants. Just 40 minutes from Lisbon, a mandatory visit!

We worked together to plan a personalized trip during our stay in Portugal. Everything was understood, organized and executed seamlessly. Felipe, our hiking guide in Sintra, took us hiking along the cliffs along the eastern most part of the country, which was just spectacular. Other hikes were equally challenging and enjoyable. Felip, Helder, and Antonio also provided us with restaurants, hotels, local sites and attractions. They are all ‘historians’ and provided us with a rich understanding of their beautiful country as well.

My husband and I, along with 2 other couples recently completed the 6 day Sintra-Cascais Hiking Tour. Our group was fairly diverse with my husband and I being avid and experienced backpackers and the other couples being, shall we say, more gym rats than outdoors people. We did a self guided tour and found the entire package to be absolutely delightful. Booking and payment from the States was simple and they were able to provide detailed information to ease some of our intrepid hikers anxiety before we left home. Each day brought a unique hike – different terrain, climate, challenges and beauty. There was a perfect mix of isolated hiking through the beautiful coastline and up into the Sintra Hills and visits to the many World Heritage sites in the region. We opted to upgrade the accommodations and it was a GREAT choice. We stayed in an incredibly cool converted convent, a seaside resort (complete with oceanfront views of surfers and the world’s largest swimming pool!) and finally we stayed in an amazing palace (yes, I said palace!) that has been converted into a 5 star hotel. Our luggage was transported with no issue and as we arrived at each location, we were quickly ushered into our rooms and treated like royalty! The staff of Portugal Nature Trails was VERY available – providing us with a local phone to use that was pre-programmed with several staff numbers (Thanks to Felipe, Paolo and Antonio!) and it was very clear that we should call if there was anything we needed. I have to say that we never called – they were exactly where they said they would be to pick us up at exactly the specified time. The hikes were challenging at times but with the 2 GPS devices they provided, we were never lost. I most highly recommend both Portugal Nature Trails and this particular hike if you are interested in experiencing a bit of the “real” Portugal along with seeing the “tourist” attractions that make the region famous.

We visited Sintra on December 31, 2015 – as a one day trip to finish up our vacation before celebrating New Year’s in Lisbon. We were mesmerized by the natural beauty as well as the architectural beauty of Sintra. Very unfortunately, upon arrival from Lisbon mid afternoon via the train, we learned that almost everything will be closing at 1:00 PM: museums, castles, etc. we were put off a little by unfriendliness by the staff of the museums, but the beauty of everything around saved the day! We also learned that one day trip to Sintra in not nearly enough to see everything. Now we are planning a trip in which we will start our Portugal vacation from Sintra while STAYING in Sintra for about three full days to visit all the castles and walk all the trails. Be prepared to wear a pair of comfortable shoes: you will be walking a lot, but the day goes by very quickly while looking and incredible masterpieces of architecture and nature.

Loved the accommodations that they booked for us along the trail. The locations were perfect. The fact that they provided two GPS systems for the four of us was perfect. Everything ran flawlessly.

An all around excellent adventure. Portugal Nature Trails organized a self guided hike for us from Cascais to Sintra and it was fabulous! Guided by a Garmin gps that they had programmed with our daily hikes we hiked from hotel to hotel, moving every two days while our bags were delivered by PNT. They could not have been nicer or more competent. The hotels, especially the convent we stayed in, were very nice and the varied scenery along the hikes was exceptional.

Our private tour began with pick up in Lisbon. We traveled to Sintra, toured Peña Palace, hiked about 3-4 miles nearby and finished with a fabulous custom picnic lunch on the cliffs. Nuno then took the scenic route back to Lisbon, driving through Cascais.

This was an amazing and sometimes rigorous hiking experience. While their were options for shorter routes we did every one of the long hikes. The hotels were beautiful and several were located directly along the sea. We did the Caisis to Sintra route. The staff were excellent. Great value for the price. The views along the way from small villages, to cliffs and woodland forest were amazing.
