Cycle from Vale das Éguas to Vila Nova de Milfontes
From the country to coastal villages and unforgettable views
Begin your ride in Vale das Éguas, pedaling through the serene countryside until you reach Sonega, a quaint village with traditional whitewashed houses nestled among rolling green fields. Continue to the picturesque fishing village of Porto Covo, where charming cobbled streets lead you to stunning coastal cliffs and beaches. Here, take in the fresh ocean air and stop for a seafood snack or a refreshing break. As you ride south, discover the historic Fortaleza do Pessegueiro, an old fortress overlooking Pessegueiro Island, offering sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. Feel the ocean breeze as you take in this breathtaking spot, once built to protect the coast from pirate attacks. Arrive at Vila Nova de Milfontes, a lively coastal town with golden beaches, charming cafés, and a welcoming atmosphere. This day is filled with seaside beauty, rich history, and the rugged charm of Portugal’s southwest coast - a truly unforgettable day!
Cycle from Vila Nova de Milfontes to Odeceixe
Today, you'll enter the famous natural reserve of southwest Alentejo and the Vicentina coast (prepare to be blown away).
Nearby, you will find the stunning Cape Sardão, which is guarded by a lighthouse. A place of absolute reconciliation between the land and the ocean. As you move down the coastline, you will be able to admire the shafts embedded in the rock walls, the seed islets here and there, and the many white stork couples that have chosen this coast as their nesting site. As you follow through Zambujeira do Mar and across the fields, you will eventually arrive at a river, where at its end, you'll arrive at Odeceixe. A charming village, sitting on a hillside, known for its old windmill, located on the tallest hill.

Start the day by going to one of the most beautiful sceneries of this coast - Odeceixe beach!
Then, you will follow a valley where once caravels sailed to the village of Aljezur, located about five kilometers inland. In Alzejur, ride through the narrow streets and visit the medieval castle! Try the famous sweet potato of Aljezur that grows in the fertile land of the region! It was recognized in 2008 by the European Union and as a protected area and food item. At the end of the day, you will arrive at Arrifana, an amazing village over the cliffs.
Cycle from Arrifana to Pedralva
Today, you will ride through some forests and move once again closer to the sea when you arrive at the incredible village of Carrapateira.
It is a quiet, pretty, and spread-out village that is rounded by a wild coast, with copper colored and ash-grey cliffs that are speckled in yellow and green scrub. You will then follow a dirt road along the sea where it is possible to see this region at its most beautiful. On the way, you will pass some stunning beaches and incredible, colorful cliffs. Then, go up on a dirt road through a beautiful round pine forest and arrive at a typical village. Pedralva was once deserted by its residents but has now bounced back in great part due to it being recovered as a hotel, known as the Pedralva Village Hotel.

On this last day, you will follow a coastal route that will let you discover some of the most beautiful and secret beaches of the Vicentina Coast.
Then, you will ride south until Cape São Vicente, the south-westernmost point of Continental Europe. This is a magical place where we almost hear the echoes of the voices of the sailors and pilgrims. Rounded by monumental cliffs and outstanding views of the coastline, the cape is not only a beauty to behold but also a privileged area to watch the natural phenomenon of bird migration.

Portugal Natural Trails proved an excellent and extremely reliable organization since our arrival at the airport till the end of the tour: Philip brought us to Sesimbra introducing friendly Portugal and the trip to us with useful and interesting information, then at the hotel explained everything about the following days and gave us the bikes which were really great. We chose to make the tour by ourselves (our third time). On our road we experienced wonderful sceneries, nice small cities and welcoming people; when arriving tired at the end of day (it was indeed challenging, at least for us, though very pleasant) we relied on very good accomodations where to relax before walking a little and get a restaurant for dinner. GPS comes with all tracks loaded, so that we abstained from stopping continuosly looking at the map: we highly recommend it expecially on dirty roads where there are no signs and it would be really hard to guess the right direction in crossroads, not unfrequent, without it. We also got sunny and windy weather (of course can’t be always provided)… in a few words: a fully satisfying experience!

We booked the Portugal Wild Coast five-day (seven with transfers) self-guided cycling tour from Santiago do Cacém to Sagres and chose the off-road option. Fantastic scenery, with some challenging riding in spots. Most of it is through the Southwest Alentejo Nature Park, so fairly unspoiled. All the hotels were very comfortable, and the planning and organization by the PNT team is excellent. Highly recommended.
