Porto to Coimbra for Families

The Porto to Coimbra for Families is a cycling tour that follows the coastline from northern to central Portugal, all while discovering the cultural and natural beauties of this region. The route starts at Porto, a vibrant city filled with history and culture to unveil, a renowned place for its Port wine and cellars. The historical center is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. On the way, you'll cross the São Jacinto Dunes Natural Reserve and the Ria de Aveiro, on the estuary of Vouga River, which marks this region and follows you to Aveiro, our little Venice with its typical moliceiro boats. The route will cross pine tree forests and the dunes, allowing you to enjoy some peace and quiet, during which you can stop at the small beaches to have a drink and contemplate the immense sea.

Transfer from Porto Airport to Porto Center
Welcome to Porto, a city full of wonders and surprises!
Our guide will pick you up from the airport and take you straight to your hotel so that, after your welcome briefing and bike fitting, you can start exploring the city right away. Porto is a place that will enchant you with its mystical atmosphere and unique character. It's hard to put into words what makes this city so special, but we promise that you won't be disappointed! Why not take the rest of the day off and immerse yourself in the local culture? You can try some delicious food, visit the famous sights, and meet some of the warmest and friendliest people you'll ever encounter. This is just the beginning of an unforgettable journey!
Bike from Porto to Furadouro
It’s time to feel the lovely sea breeze from the Atlantic.
This first day starts from the old Porto crossing the Dom Luís Bridge, which has a spectacular view over the Douro River. It will provide great moments to keep in memory. On the way, you will have the chance to enjoy several small beaches like Valadares, Francelos, and Miramar while cycling on a path near the coastline. Although the water might be too cold for some, these beaches are a great spot to swim and enjoy the sun (if the weather conditions allow it!). Miramar Beach is worth a stop to visit a small and intriguing little chapel, sitting on the top of a boulder by the shore, the famous Capela do Senhor da Pedra. At Espinho, a seaside resort town, you will continue on a beautiful cycling path along the pine tree forest to Furadouro beach. On the way, you will discover the beautiful Lagoon of Paramos (also known as Esmoriz Lagoon), where you can observe some birdlife. The overnight will be in Ovar, an open-air tile museum.
Bike from Furadouro to Torreira
Today, you will have the opportunity to discover the incredible and historic hidden secrets of Portugal.
Leave Ovar and ride, preparing yourself for an easy but challenging day. The goal is to reach Torreira and Ria de Aveiro. You will face some easy and flat roads leading you to Ria de Aveiro. The Ria de Aveiro is a shallow coastal lagoon connected to the Atlantic Ocean. Its unique mastoidal wetland area has several branches forming islands and is an absolute pleasure to ride along to. Surrounded by dunes, Praia da Torreira is located on the coastline that separates the Ria de Aveiro from the sea, a prime spot for surfing. In contrast, the calm waters of the Ria are ideal for sailing or windsurfing. Don’t forget to try the local gastronomy. Seafood comes as fresh as you can get!

Today, you will get to visit the city known as Portuguese Venice.
Ria de Aveiro, the shallow coastal lagoon you saw yesterday, runs to the city of Aveiro. The canals of the Ria cross the city and transmit an atmosphere of serenity and beauty not found anywhere else. There's a lot of water, salt pans, and people who gave their lives to the sea. If you arrive on time, ride in one of the moliceiro boats. In the past, these boats were used for harvesting the mole, an alga often used to fertilize agricultural land. Today, there are several boats with colorful panels that we see navigating the urban channels of the Ria de Aveiro.
Bike from Aveiro to Praia de Mira
Discover incredible and lovely views over the Atlantic.
As you leave Aveiro, you will head down a path that crosses a land of ponds, where salt is extracted by an old traditional method passed down through generations. As you head on, you will arrive at a dock in which you can view the harbor and some old codfish boats. After, you will cross the main bridge and arrive in Barra Village. On the way to Mira, you will have the opportunity to admire the famous haystack houses of Costa Nova, easily recognizable by the paintings on vertical-colored bands. Then, the scenery will be from the Ria itself. However, as you arrive at the end of it, the landscape will begin to change into small fields and vegetable gardens right up until Mira Beach.

Today, you will once again leave the coast.
This will be your last contact with the Atlantic Ocean during the trip. And now, as you are heading to the center of the country, the elevation gain will be a challenge. At the very beginning of the route, you will pass by two lagoons, and a bit further in the middle of the day, you will find Casal de São Tomé, a perfect place for a picnic and to recover your energy. The moment you start to see vineyards means you are getting into the Cantanhede area. From now on, this will be your landscape until you get to your destination today.

Prepare yourself to discover Portugal’s medieval capital - Coimbra!
This day starts on gravel roads, taking you through villages and towns until you reach the Mondego River, which will guide you to the heart of Coimbra. This charming city was the first capital of Portugal, and the first University was placed here in 1537, where many Portuguese writers, doctors, philosophers, and scientists studied throughout the times. University of Coimbra - Alta and Sofia was built in the Royal Palace of Alcáçova, a historical place full of charm, beauty, and heritage, as the 12th-century Cathedral of Santa Cruz, several 16th-century colleges, the Joanine Library with a baroque decor, or the 18th-century Botanical Garden.
