Cycle from Fundão to Idanha

A first taste of Portugal’s inner roads

After a traditional Portuguese breakfast, we begin the first ride of the journey, heading south into one of central Portugal’s most atmospheric cycling regions. From the opening kilometers, the roads are quiet, well surfaced, and ideal for finding a smooth, steady rhythm. The route passes through historic villages including Alpedrinha, Póvoa da Atalaia, and Castelo Novo, the latter known for its compact and harmonious hillside design. Along the way, expansive views, centuries old bridges, and stretches of cork oak and olive groves define the landscape. We finish the ride in the Idanha region, where the day naturally shifts from cycling to the table, offering a first taste of the local flavors, traditions, and understated pleasures of this part of Portugal.

Cycle from Idanha to Penamacor

After you leave Idanha-a-Nova, you will pass by a beautiful lake located in Idanha-a-Velha, a picturesque village and one of the oldest in Portugal

Founded by the Romans, it was descended upon by civilizations including the Visigoths, Moors, and the Order of the Knights Templar. Then, engraved into the slope of a great steep elevation, rises Monsanto with its granite houses, swollen by rocks themselves. The day will end at Penamacor, another historical village which has a castle sitting at its summit.

We have had the opportunity to use Backroads, Macs Adventures, bike tours.com and Cyclomundo for road cycling vacations. While all were good, Portugal Nature Trails was the best. The trip we took was the historical villages of Portugal. They were kind enough to provide us with alternative routes with longer mileage and increased climbing. The hotels they booked were excellent, the route selection superb, and the customer service was unparalleled. From start to finish we felt very well taken care of. Our trip was a self-guided trip. On our routes we saw very little to no traffic and felt very safe on the road. We will be back next year for another arranged tour by Portugal Nature Trails. We highly recommend them.
