Arrival in Tomar
Welcome to Portugal!
Once you arrive in this stunning country full of stories to tell, a transfer will take you to Tomar. Once one of the most influential cities in the Iberian Península, Tmar was the old headquarters of the Order of the Templars. Here, you can find several monuments where the history of Portugal is highlighted. Visit the Convent of Christ and the Castle of Tomar, both classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. In the center of Tomar, you can find the Church of São João Batista, which has many years of history as it was built in the 15th century. The city offers unique scenery with river Nabão and its historical center, making it the perfect starting point for this cycling adventure. Enjoy!
Cycle from Tomar to Alvados
Let the adventure begin!
Today, we say goodbye to the “City of the Templars”. This first stage will take us to Alvados, a little village in the heart of the Natural Park of Serra de Aire e Candeeiros. On the way, you will find a unique passage next to one of the biggest and most imposing Portuguese aqueducts, the Pegões Aqueduct, which dates from the 16th century. It will be a day marked by beautiful landscapes of cedars and olive groves on a rocky and mountainous path as we discover the magnificent trails of the Natural Park. To end the day, you will relax and recharge your energy in your hotel.

Explore the hidden secrets of the region!
After a typical breakfast, it’s time to discover the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros! This circular stage will let you know some of the most beautiful villages in the region. Drawn between rocky and limestone landscapes, they remind us of a painting. However, the true wealth of this mountain lies in its interior, in the several caves sculpted by time and water. These caves are one of the region's main attractions, and you will have the opportunity to visit the Santo António and Alvados Caves, where part of its beauty is revealed. You will also pass through Porto de Mós, where you can visit its castle, a structure with unique characteristics built under the rubble of a Roman lookout post.
Cycle from Alvados to Alcobaça
Explore the Templar Route!
Today's route will take you along the Natural Park of Serras de Aire e Candeeiros. Having as a destination the historical town of Alcobaça, it will be a day spent among the magnificent mountain views in what was once a Templar Route. Cycle through old railroads, conquer castles and discover where part of the Portuguese identity was formed. Visit some of the most important Portuguese monuments, nowadays classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. Take the opportunity to enjoy the rest and delight yourself with the typical gastronomic dishes of this incredible region.
Cycle from Alcobaça to Nazaré
The day you will meet the sea.
Today, after enjoying the last moments in Alcobaça, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will continue cycling among the green contours of the landscape that will lead you toward the ocean views. Today's route will take you to the fishing town of Nazaré, worldwide known for its gastronomy and long beach, where surfer Garrett McNamara entered the Guinness World Record for the largest wave surfed by a man. It will be a route marked by the breeze and flavors of the ocean and by contact with those who live in this region. Stop, enjoy the local delicacies, and discover why is Nazaré so special!
Cycle from Nazaré to Óbidos
Today you will discover a UNESCO Heritage Medieval walled town!
After a traditional breakfast, it’s time to leave Nazaré and ride along the coast, feeling the fresh breeze from the sea. Along the way, you can discover the Portuguese Coast by observing beautiful beaches. You will pass through incredible fishing villages and bays, such as São Martinho do Porto. After passing Foz do Arelho, you will ride inland towards the Mediaeval town of Óbidos, where you will discover one of the most picturesque and well-preserved castles in Portugal. Feel the middle-aged theme in the air as you let this magical place put a spell on you. Once in Obidos, remember to drink the bright red Ginja in the little dark chocolate cup, a delicious tradition that you cannot miss.

Wow what a fantastic experience this was for my husband and I. We can not express enough the professionalism of this company Portugal Nature Trails. From our start in Porto to the finish in Obidos it was a wonderful experience cycling every day through the magnificent areas of Portugal and then at night sampling the excellent food and wine of the local area. We opted for 4 star hotels were possible and we were not disappointed. The small towns we checked through offered the opportunity for you to purchase fresh water or food if you wished. The information pack distributed by the company was so detailed it was amazing. Additionally, we had a GPS which also offered guidance throughout the trip. We would highly recommend this company for their attention to detail, quality service and can do attitude. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride with Portugal Nature Trails. Diana in the office was excellent with all our requests from the start to the end. We have done many rides with many companies but PNT came out top with service right from the first email and phone call. They gave us Garmins to use for navigation and was really easy to use. The cycle paths in Portugal are excellent and it was great to have a good mix of cycle paths and quiet country roads. We loved the whole route cycling along the Atlantic, through Portuguese villages and farmlands, and miles and miles of pine forests along the way. Most days we hardly saw other cyclists and so had the paths to ourselves almost all the time. Next time I would probably use a road bike because the hybrid bikes were a little heavy for the hills on the last 3 days. We used their airport pickup and drop off service and both their staff who picked us were excellent and gave us useful information and tips for Porto and Lisbon. I highly recommend Portugal Nature trails and I would definitely use them again if I returned to Portugal to another ride or hike

Easy company to work with. Responsive. Great hotels exceeded expectations. High quality single suspension bikes. Riding with GPS navigation easy to use but takes a little getting used to if you’ve never done it before. Bring your own handlebar mount that you are comfortable with. Routes are well designed and overall moderate in terms of total distance and difficulty. Some brief sections definitely more technical (probably better suited to dual suspension bike with fat tires). Try and do some training ahead of time. Overall highly recommend.

We made a travel from a templer castle town Tomar to Nazare and rode on the coastline to Ericeira (mix of “templer castle” and “coastal” tours) with a gravel road bike and an e-bike. It was quite good combination of hills and coast, history and nature. Staffs of the company were so helpful and kind to recommend the good plan with maximum flexibility and good communication. Accommodations were excellent (sometime too excellent for us) but price was reasonable. On the way, roads were quiet and almost no stress of traffic. Driving manner was good and people were friendly to tourists from Asia. Gravel paths were no problem with the rental bikes. For us, Japanese, good seafoods relieve the stress of the ride with tasty green wine!

This was the most amazing trip and a great way to discover the beauty of Portugal! The trip was well organized, and the booking office was super helpful in helping organize the trip and selecting bikes. The trip included beautiful boutique hotels, local cuisine, an organised itinerary, luggage transfers each day, suggestions for dinner, and recommended stops along the GPS route each day. We took a self-guided trip on gravel bikes from Tomar to Obidosh, traveling on country roads and through picturesque villages. The first two days had some elevation, so training was a must, but totally worth the effort. We will totally book with Portugal Nature Trails when we return for another trip!
