Itinerary
Transfer from Lisbon or Faro to Cercal do Alentejo
On the first day, one of our guides will pick you up at the airport and welcome you to Portugal.
You will be transferred to the middle of the Alentejo coast, where you will be accommodated at the Herdade da Matinha, a luxurious retreat. Enjoy the silence, the swimming pool, and a delicious meal at the restaurant.
Hike from Cercal do Alentejo to Vila Nova de Milfontes
As you leave Matinha, go through a beautiful natural forest.
Let your senses enjoy the natural perfume of wild herbs such as lavender, thyme, calamintha, and rosemary. As you approach the coast, you will walk on the coastal plain, where you can find some ground-nesting birds and the famous white stork. There will also be some interesting old fortresses that remind us of the time when this coast used to be ravaged by pirates! To finish the day, climb up the cliffs and explore the beaches of Aivados, Malhão, and some small deserted coves all the way to Vila Nova de Milfontes.
Hike from Vila Nova de Milfontes to Almograve
Today, your adventure will start by heading south and crossing the Mira River by boat.
Before we go any further, we invite you to experience the natural surroundings with your deepest senses. Smell it, breathe it, feel it! As we keep moving on our sensory experience, the river will meet the ocean creating a magnificent display of all sorts of Mediterranean plants and herbs. Take note of the sky as well, as this is an area known for its variety of bird species. Count dozens of stork nests on the rocks and finally arrive at Longueira beach! Enjoy your rest for the night.
Hike from Almograve to Touril
Today's hike will take you to the old lighthouse of Cape Sardão, illuminating sailors' adventures since 1915.
Apart from its history, it is also a place of immense beauty, as the ocean and land meet in perfect union. Along the way, you will pass through some beautiful locations, such as the fishing port of Lapa das Pombas, where traditional techniques are still in use to this day! You will also pass by the beach of Almograve, which is absolutely stunning. As the day comes to an end, it is time for some rest and relaxation at the lovely Touril Guest House.
Hike from Touril to Brejão
After a delicious breakfast, another brilliant day of shaped cliffs, deserted beaches, and unforgettable golden colors will commence!
First, you will head to the town of Zambujeira do Mar, and you will not be disappointed with the track. Travel back in time when you arrive at Entrada da Barca, a local fishing port, and be delighted with our empty coast that leads you to deserted places which have nearly no access. Explore and have some fun! At the end of the day, make sure to enjoy a delicious dish of fresh local fish, such as sea bass, sea bream, or grey bream, at Brejão's place.
Hike from Brejão to Odeceixe
Today will be a journey through time, local culture, and nature trails!
The sound of the ocean is magic. The smell of the air is fresh. The rocks are engraved with the writings of the time, and the birds won't let you forget how simple life can be. As you reach Odeceixe, you will cross the river that separates the two southernmost regions of Portugal, Alentejo, and Algarve. This place will mark the end of the hike, and it is time to celebrate with a great dinner in the village. Enjoy!
Hike from Odeceixe to Rogil
Start your walk side by side with the Seixe River and its wetlands until you get to Odeceixe beach.
The trail over the ocean will let you wander and offer superb beach views. Close to the end, you will cross inland towards João Roupeiro Hamlet. All adventures need good food, and the most famous sweet potato in the world comes from here! There is also a great choice of tasty main dishes and regional pastries.
Hike from Rogil to Aljezur
Today, you will cross several agricultural fields of the famous sweet potato!
After, you will follow a dirt road that will take you closer to the ocean. Awaiting you will be a beautiful beach and the valley of Amoreira. Nevertheless, there is still another surprise in store for you today - Aljezur and its amazing Moorish castle. This city was founded by the Arabs in the 10th century and has an impressive archeological site. Explore like a conqueror and reach the castle. The view is mesmerizing!
Hike from Aljezur to Arrifana
Today, you will start inland and slowly reach the ocean.
Follow a coastal route that will take you by the mythical Ponta da Atalaia, a fantastic promontory where many ruins of ancient Moorish fortresses lay. The trail after this point will lead you to the top of the cliffs, home to a specific type of coastal ecosystem. It's a sort of Mediterranean bushland filled with aromatic plants that grow on the coastal dunes. Touch nature step by step and then have a great rest in the beautiful village of Arrifana.
Hike from Arrifana to Carrapateira
Feel the power of the sea breaking over the ancient cliffs and discover the quiet sandy beaches.
Be sure to take your camera today because you will need it when you witness the beauty of Pedra da Agulha in Canal Beach. A gorgeous boulder, sitting in the ocean. After, as you hike through a succession of hills and valleys, you will pass over the most aggressive and inaccessible side of this coastal area. End up at the whitewashed village of Carrapateira, where history speaks through the fortress built for defensive purposes back in the era of the discoveries.
Hike from Carrapateira to Pedralva
On this day, as you hike between land and ocean, the rural atmosphere will conquer your heart.
On the steepest slopes, you can admire the natural vegetation virtually untouched by man, with dense undergrowth arbutus and dozens of local plants and herbs. Soon, you will arrive at one of the most interesting places and accommodations. Pedralva is a little village that was nearly deserted a few years ago. However, it has been recently revived as a charming guest house hamlet, which kept the original design together and brought back life to the village of Pedralva.
Hike from Pedralva to Vila do Bispo
After a great breakfast, the day will start with some smooth crossing over the forest and open land areas.
Later, as you pass by the beaches of Barriga, Cordoama, and Castelejo, notice the surrounding biodiversity, including reptiles, birds, mammals, and amphibians! As your hike comes to an end, you will arrive at Vila do Bispo. A town with traditional architecture, religious structures, and an absolutely unique location. Local products, such as fruit and fresh fish, are on sale daily at the municipal market. Take a look and get some goodies for your next trip.
Hike from Vila do Bispo to Sagres
The landscape is flat, and the vegetation is low. Today, you will be walking towards the southwesternmost point of Continental Europe.
When you arrive, you will see the small yet excellent Museum of Faróis, showcasing Sagres's role in Portugal's maritime history! This is a historical location where one can almost hear the echoes of the voices of sailors and pilgrims. Beyond here, only the immense Atlantic Ocean remains, a point of passage, arrival, and encounters.
