Arrival in Furnas
On the day of your arrival, our guide will welcome you at the airport of Ponta Delgada and transfer you to your accommodation.
On your arrival day, our guide will welcome you to Ponta Delgada and transfer you to your accommodation. Here you can rest, prepare for the next days, or go for a walk around the city. Depending on your arrival time, you can visit "Casa do Chá" - the only place in Europe where Camellia, a plant from which tea is produced, is cultivated and processed. Taste the delicious local tea and enjoy the landscape around you.
Hike Furnas Loop (Pico do Ferro)
A walk around Azores' famous Furnas Lake
Your first adventure in the Azores starts at Furnas, a popular spot on São Miguel, known for its bubbling “Caldeiras” (mineral-rich geothermal polls) and their use for preparing a traditional stew in a hole in the ground heated by volcanic activity. This circular route will take you around the lake through the wonderful flora and fauna of the Island. The tall trees contrasting with the blooming flowers are the perfect environment to appreciate the calmness and tranquility of this place. Then at the end of the day, we suggest you experience a swim in the therapeutic and warm waters. This is a worldwide place known for its volcanic waters and gardens.
Hike Ribeira Funda - Praia da Viola - Gorreana
Today you will visit the Gorreana Tea Factory, a unique place in Europe where you can learn more about tea culture on the Island.
After a short transfer, you will depart for the ascent of the Pico da Vara (the highest point of São Miguel Island at 1.105 m). These paths inserted in the Natural Forest Reserve were used in the past by the "elders" to access the forest where they produced charcoal and kept livestock. This is an area of extremely rich biodiversity and great importance for the recovery of the Laurissilva forest and the Azores Bullfinch, one of the few species of fauna endemic to the Azores. After the walk, you will visit the oldest tea plantation in Europe and discover the secrets of this wonderful product that kept its original traditions since 1983.
Hike Lagoa do Fogo
Discover the breathtaking panorama of the enchanting turquoise waters of Lagoa do Fogo.
Today you will find one of the most beautiful and untouched lakes in Portugal - Lagoa do Fogo. Classified as a nature reserve, and located in the heart of the island, this will be an unforgettable experience filled with superb views. The trail begins in farm pastures and climbs through a forest of eucalyptus, pittosporum, and acacias, following a stream before reaching the shore of Lagoa do Fogo. Once there, the views over the entire lake and the surrounding slopes are magnificent. Enjoy the moment. The way back will cross places of great importance to the island, showing you part of its history.
Whale Watching
Experience the unique wonder of the Azores on a whale and dolphin-watching trip!
Today is a day to take a break and explore the magnificent Atlantic Ocean for a change. Whales are irresistibly drawn to this volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic. The crystal-clear waters, the abundance of food, and the legal protection provided to the cetaceans make the Azores a true sanctuary for many species. It is simply an unforgettable experience to be out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and watch a massive whale swimming gracefully in the immense sea. Sea turtles, dolphins, sharks, and flying fish are some of the other fascinating sea creatures you can see during this trip.
Hike Lagoa do Canário
Explore the Sete Cidades volcanic complex.
After some free time to explore the most emblematic places of Ponta Delgada, a transfer will take you to the Serra da Devassa. Today's goal is to walk along with volcanic cones and small lakes integrated into a protected area, part of the Sete Cidades volcanic complex. The trail will take you through incredible hidden landscapes marked by dense forests on all sides. You will have the opportunity to see Lagoa do Canário, Lagoa Rasa, Caldeirão Grande, and Lagoa das Empadadas. This fantastic walk is sometimes accompanied by fog, which gives it a special atmosphere.
Hike Lagoa das Sete Cidades
Today you will discover a postcard hike in the Azores!
Considered one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal, the protected landscape of the 7 Cidades lake is one of the most photogenic areas of the Azores. It all starts from the viewpoint of Vista do Rei, where you will admire the breathtaking view over the mystical blue and green lakes. Then, the path will lead you downhill toward Lagoa Azul. Surrounding the lakes, you will notice the happy cows grazing on the cliffs. A bucolic setting synonymous with beauty and tranquility. Enjoy every moment and, at the end of the day, delight yourself in the local cuisine.

We went to Sao Miguel Island for 8 days. Portugal Nature Trails had booked the two hotels, and suggested 5 hikes and a whale watching trip. We booked flights. Everything went smooth, transfer to/from airport and to/from each hike. We had nice communication with all members of the team all the way, and when we wanted little changes in the programme it was never a problem. The island and the hikes were absolutely amazing, and I recommend arranging transport to/from hikes with a company like this, to allow good hikes.
