Arrival in São Pedro de Moel
Welcome to Lisbon!
Our guide will be ready to pick you up at the Lisbon airport and drive you to São Pedro de Moel. After that, you will have your welcome briefing and bike fitting.
Cycle from São Pedro de Moel to Óbidos
Your first day will be a ride that passes through some pine forests and beautiful beaches.
Today you will discover a UNESCO Heritage Medieval walled town! After a traditional breakfast, it’s time to leave São Pedro de Moel and ride along the coast through magnificent pine forests and beautiful beaches. Visit Nazaré, a typical fisherman village, full of colors, where the daily catch is still dried off under the sun. Continue riding close to the sea and pass by a beautiful bay at Foz do Arelho. Then, go inland and ride to the medieval town of Óbidos, where you will discover one of the most picturesque and well-preserved castles in Portugal. Feel the middle-aged theme in the air as you let this magical place put a spell on you. Once in Óbidos, remember to drink the bright red Ginja in the little dark chocolate cup, a delicious tradition that you cannot miss.This day will begin close to the lagoon of Óbidos, which eventually connects to the ocean, creating a wonderful place with a gorgeous beach.
As you continue heading south, you will discover great rock formations, the Carvoeiro cape, and the incredible town of Peniche, which rests on a peninsula. On this day, do not forget to enjoy the numerous restaurants in Peniche as they serve and an outstanding variety of fresh fish and seafood.

Today, you will be starting by the sea.
However, after a short ride, you will head back inland, where an entirely different scenery presents itself. Authentic and rustic Portuguese villages with white houses and red roofs surrounded by the beautiful countryside that will invigorate you. As you pass through incredible valleys of limestone and vibrant, green Mediterranean vegetation, you will approach your final destination - Ericeira, the Portuguese Mecca of the surf. Ericeira is also one of the most beautiful fishing villages in Portugal and will be your home for the night.Cycle from Ericeira to Sintra
The Sintra Natural Park and its hills will be the set for today's adventures, which will involve a route that is a constant up-and-down.
However, before, delight yourself with some of the beautiful places Sintra has to offer, such as Monserrate Palace. Here, you can stop and visit a unique and exquisite example of Romanticism. Once you arrive at the village of Sintra (UNESCO World Heritage Site), you will have a whole free day to explore and discover its mystique. We recommend visiting the astonishing Pena Palace, a fairytale palace with a sequence of fantasy-like domes, towers, ramparts, and walkways on one of the highest mountain peaks of Sintra.

Discover the impressive beaches nestling between the cliffs that have been artistically sculpted by the water and wind.
On the last day of biking, you will cross the hills all the way to the top, close to the mystical Convento dos Capuchos, which is installed in the rock and lined with cork. As you continue, your ride will take you to the Atlantic ocean, where you will arrive at the westernmost point in continental Europe - Cape Roca, a promontory rising 150 meters above ocean. Ride along the coast and finally arrive at Cascais, a lovely seaside town.

A meeting in Lisbon gave us the opportunity to have a ‘team building’ event arranged by Portugal Nature Trails. From biking Madrid-Lisbon in the summer, I knew that whatever Antonio and Co. would arrange for us would be high quality…. and we were not disappointed. The weather was not the best on the first day so we headed out of the hills and over to the coast where the cloud was breaking and enjoyed great views of the big surf rolling in from the Atlantic. Lunch at a cool place high up in a converted windmill. Back in the saddle, we climbed back into the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais on forest single tracks. 65km and 1500m of ascent. Day 2 and the weather much better climbing again through the park, mostly off road and then exploring the southern side of the hills before lunch overlooking the sea at Guincho. Back over the hills after lunch and a sporty single track descent back into Sintra by the palace Quinta de Regaleira. 50km and 1300m of ascent. 2 great days biking on high quality bikes. My 18 year old son and I did the Atlantic West Coast and Sintra Tour. Portugal Nature Trails did an excellent job of organizing the trip, supporting us, and modifying the tour at our request. The mix of really hard days and easier days was perfect. The accommodations they arranged were well located and most helpful. We really appreciated the flexibility that Portugal Nature Trails showed in modifying the tour to permit us to travel to Torres Vedras. The bikes, gps, maps, and instructions were all professionally maintained and quality.

We had a wonderful independent ride with Portugal Nature Tours. The route was well thought out to showcase the Atlantic Coast. The accomodation was generally very good bearing in mind that some of the overnight stops are in small seaside villages. Unfortunately 2 of our friends suffered illnesses during the ride and PNT sent a taxi to a very isolated spot to collect them and they were subsequently transported with the luggage transfer until they were well enough to ride. Something to consider would be having one rest day, maybe in Sintra or even Ericeira to enable some sightseeing because unless you are a fit regular rider some of the days are quite tiring. A great way to see the country!

We just returned from doing the Easy Atlantic Way self guided bike tour with Portugal Nature Trails. It was a wonderful ride and we were easily able to customize our itinerary by adding extra nights in Porto, Aveiro (recommended), and tacking on nights in Obidos and Sintra after the ride through PNT. The hotels were all great and in good locations. The bikes were more mountain bike like than we thought they would be but that worked out well since the surfaces you ride on are varied. The bikes rode well and once we adjusted the handle bars to our liking where comfortable. We were able to add some mirrors to the end of the handle bars and that was very nice. We did not bring our seats and pedals and we should have. The planning process was very timely and our questions and requests for extra nights and upgrading the room type were handled quickly and well. The local support was very good, meeting us at the train station in Porto and spending a couple of hours with us to go over the route and adjust the bikes. The routes were well planned to keep you away from traffic as much as possible and were fairly easy for the most part. Day 4 does have a pretty healthy hill climb at the end and has been rerouted away from the 2016 wildfire area for safety reasons. The new route is more inland but was a nice ride through small villages and gave us a taste of what life is like in rural Portugal. Day 5 for us was the hardest due to rain and a stiff headwind for the four hours of riding. There are a fair amount of bike paths in the route (~30%) and the rest are usually on quiet less traveled roads. The GPS units were okay for navigation, and luckily PNT provided us with test ridewithgps routes which proved very helpful and I would recommend asking for them. The logistics of having our luggage moved everyday worked seamlessly and when we arrived at our destination hotel the luggage was already there and in our room at most hotels. The bike ride gave us a great taste of the beautiful Portugal coast and its varied looks and the different towns along the way. There were many people biking portions of this route that we encountered, and many people out day biking. We would highly recommend PNT if you are considering a bike or hiking tour in Portugal.

Nine of us did a self-guided cycle down the Atlantic West Coast & Sintra. It was fabulous. A mix of old castles and staggering views of surf beaches. We loved it. And this tour company is top-notch. From the moment they picked us up in Lisbon, we felt totally cared for. We’ve done about a dozen bike tours and this one started with the best briefing ever. Despite normally using hybrids, we all opted for eBikes given the large elevation gains – and we were glad we did. For some of us, this was our first or second experience using eBikes – for others, they have them at home – but these Bosch-built bikes were amazing. In the Fall, weather can be challenging on this coast – and this year it was – but we felt 100% supported by the company in case of problems. Again, probably the best experience we’ve had on a self-guided trip. Portuguese Nature Trails deserves 6 stars for their excellent support team.

As a small group of four, we had a terrific e-bike ride on the Portuguese Atlantic Coast (from Sao Pedro de Moel through Cascais) and through Sintra with Paul Rente, our guide. A very experienced rider himself, he had a solution for every issue that came up along the way. He pointed out and took us to many sites of interest and told us fascinating stories, and matched his pace to ours. He was a delightful companion. Highly recommend!
