From the vine-covered valleys of the Douro to the wild coastal cliffs of the Algarve, from the cork forests of the Alentejo to the volcanic trails of the Azores and the dramatic mountain roads of Madeira, every landscape rewards a rider who takes the time to explore it properly.

At Portugal Nature Trails, we believe the right bike changes everything. It is the difference between enduring a climb and enjoying it, between arriving tired and arriving ready for dinner. That is why we do not simply hand you a bicycle: we select it, prepare it and fit it to you personally, based on your experience, your comfort and the terrain of your tour.

Whichever bike you choose, it arrives fully prepared for the road ahead. You show up, we take care of the rest.

Helmet, adjustable (fits up to 62 cm) and professionally fitted before departure. Bring your own for a perfect fit

Prefer to ride your own bike?

You are welcome to bring it. We can provide a helmet and lock so you can travel light, and if you need a spare tube, tell us your bike’s specifications in advance and we will do our best to arrange one, subject to availability. Your Ride with GPS route is shared to your smartphone, exactly as with our rental bikes.

Bringing your own saddle or pedals?

Also welcome. Let us know in advance so we can confirm compatibility, and we will fit them at the start of your trip. Clip-in pedals and shoes are recommended for experienced riders only.

Worth packing

Padded cycling shorts, cycling gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen and a light wind or rain layer make long days much more comfortable.

The bike fitting process

A great cycling tour starts before you turn a pedal. A properly fitted bike prevents discomfort, reduces fatigue and makes multi-day riding far more enjoyable.

Before you travel

Tell us your height, your riding experience and any preferences (handlebar type, saddle, pedals). We select the right bike and size and prepare it in advance.

At your briefing

We set up the bike to your body: saddle height, handlebar position, cleat alignment if you use clip-in pedals. Test-ride it and tell us anything that does not feel right.

On tour

If something needs adjusting after the first day, our team is on hand to fine-tune it. If a bike is not suitable, we may be able to swap it, depending on location and availability.

Frame sizes vary by model, so we always confirm your size personally. As a starting point:

If you are between sizes, tell us your inseam (inside-leg) measurement and whether you prefer a more upright or a sportier position.

Many of our guests have not ridden in a while, or are exploring this type of terrain for the first time. That is perfectly fine: we make sure the bike feels right, and that you feel confident from kilometre one.

Cycling together through a Portuguese village at golden hour, stopping for ice cream in a small town square: whatever the age of your youngest rider, we will find the right setup.

Up to 22 kg

A simple, secure solution for riding with the youngest members of the family. Mounted on the bike, it keeps your child close, comfortable and part of everything.

Croozer child trailer

Up to 30–45 kg

A comfortable, fully enclosed trailer in single and double versions. It converts easily into a stroller, practical on rest days and in town.

E-bikes explained

Electric bikes make longer stages and steeper terrain accessible to more riders. Here is what the numbers mean and how to get the most from your battery.

Battery capacity (Wh, the "fuel tank")

Motor torque (Nm, the climbing "pull")

E-Gravel range: up to ~150 km on a full battery. The E-Hybrid uses a Bosch mid-drive motor; its torque depends on the exact model supplied. Real range always depends on terrain, assistance level and rider weight.

Wh: the size of the “fuel tank”

Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh). More Wh means more energy available for the day: our e-gravel bike carries 350Wh, the e-hybrid 545Wh and the e-MTB 600Wh.

Nm: how hard the motor pulls

Torque, measured in newton-meters (Nm), is what you feel on a steep climb. The e-gravel’s Mahle X20 gives a light, natural 55Nm; the e-MTB’s Bosch Performance Line CX delivers up to 85Nm for steep, technical trails.

You still pedal

These are pedal-assist bikes (pedelecs): the motor only helps while you pedal. Under EU rules, assistance fades out at 25 km/h, so you ride at a natural pace and the bike handles like a normal bicycle.

What affects range

Range depends on the assistance level you choose, the amount of climbing, rider and luggage weight, tire pressure, wind and temperature. Higher assistance makes climbs easier but uses the battery faster; lower assistance extends range.

Tips to make your battery last all day

Start the day in a low (eco) mode and save the higher modes for the steep climbs.
Shift to an easier gear before a climb. Motors work best when you keep a steady, quick cadence instead of pushing a hard gear.
Check your tire pressure in the morning: soft tires cost energy.
Glance at the battery display at lunch and adjust your assistance for the afternoon.

Charging: on guided tours your guide manages charging. On self-guided tours you charge your e-bike at your accommodation each evening; we give you clear instructions, and the bikes are prepared to handle the daily stages when used appropriately. No e-bike experience is needed: basic cycling skills are enough, and we show you how everything works at the briefing.

How to read "easiest climbing gear": it is the front chainring teeth divided by the largest rear cog. The lower the number, the easier it is to pedal up steep hills; below 1.0 your pedals turn faster than the rear wheel. On e-bikes the motor adds its own help on top of the gearing. *The e-hybrid's single chainring is paired with Bosch assistance, so climbing feels much easier than the ratio suggests.

There are places in Portugal that you simply cannot reach on any other bike. Limestone singletracks winding through the karst landscapes of Central Portugal, from the Templar mountains of Tomar to the Atlantic coast. Technical trails through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, climbing to ancient convents and descending towards Guincho Beach. Coastal singletrack along the Rota Vicentina, where the cliffs drop into the ocean and the path belongs entirely to you.

Our MTBs are built for real trail conditions. The lightweight carbon hardtail frame delivers the responsiveness and precision that technical terrain demands. The limestone singletracks of Central Portugal are steep. The coastal trails of the Atlantic are long. The climbs out of the Douro valley are relentless. On a standard mountain bike, these routes demand a high level of fitness. On an e-MTB they become accessible, without losing any of what makes them remarkable.

Powered by a Bosch Performance Line CX motor, the most powerful trail motor in the Bosch range at up to 85Nm of torque, the assistance kicks in exactly when you need it: on steep climbs, on extended technical sections, on the long haul back after a demanding descent. The bike remains fully controllable and the riding stays real. You are simply able to do more of it, for longer.

Built on a high-strength aluminum frame with 120mm front suspension, Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires and a dropper seatpost for technical descents, this is a proper trail machine, with a 600Wh InTube battery designed for full days on demanding terrain. It is mountain biking with a wider door, one that more riders can walk through.

Bikes & equipment FAQ

Can I bring my own bike, saddle or pedals?

Yes. You are welcome to bring your own bike, saddle or pedals. Please contact us in advance so we can confirm compatibility with the tour, and we will help with installation at the start of your trip. Clip-in pedals and shoes are recommended only for experienced riders.

Do I need to bring my own equipment?

No. When you rent a bike from us it comes with a helmet, repair kit with a spare tube, bottle cages, a lock where your itinerary requires one, and your Ride with GPS route on your smartphone. For extra comfort we recommend bringing padded cycling shorts and gloves, especially for longer rides.

How do I choose the right bike size?

We select the correct size based on your height, experience and preferences, and prepare the bike in advance. At the start of your tour, during the briefing, each bike is individually adjusted to you in a dedicated fitting session.

Can I change bikes during the tour?

If your bike is not suitable and there is availability, we may be able to arrange a change. This depends on your location and the type of bike requested, and additional costs may apply. We recommend testing your bike during the briefing and telling us about any concerns at that moment.

Which bike should I choose if I have not ridden in years?

The touring hybrid or the e-hybrid. Both have an upright position and flat, easy-to-control handlebars; the e-hybrid adds Bosch motor assistance and a low step-through frame that is easy to get on and off.

What is the range of an e-bike during the tour?

Our e-bikes are prepared to comfortably support the daily stages of each tour. Range depends on terrain, riding style and assistance level: higher assistance makes climbs easier but uses more battery, lower assistance extends range. Our team gives you practical tips to manage this, even if you have never ridden an e-bike.

Do I need to charge my own e-bike?

On guided tours your guide manages charging. On self-guided tours you charge your e-bike at your accommodation; clear instructions are provided.

Are e-bikes suitable if I have never used one before?

Yes. E-bikes are very intuitive. Basic cycling skills are required, but no previous e-bike experience is needed, and we show you how everything works at the briefing.

What is the difference between a gravel bike and a road bike?

A road bike is built for speed on paved roads, with narrow 32mm tires and a sporty position. A gravel bike keeps the drop handlebars but adds wider 40mm tires, a more relaxed position and easier climbing gears, so you can leave the pavement for dirt roads and tracks.
